One morning, Emeka’s block stops noticing each other. Neighbors walk straight past neighbors — and something called The Dim is swallowing every person that nobody sits beside. There is a new girl on the stoop across the street, and waving from Emeka’s own steps does nothing at all. So Emeka steps off the curb, and the crossing takes her to a school in New Orleans in 1960, and a very small girl in a white dress walking in with four men beside her — to a classroom of empty desks, and the one seat nobody had taken.
